Standing on the Shoulders of Giants

On November 7th I shot my friend Rall a text message:

Wanna do a black and brown podcast with me?

There was no preface, no explanation. He texted me back:

You had me at hello.

Honestly, I blame Stacey Abrams. I mean, I spent the better part of the last four years rage tweeting and facebooking while she actually got shit done. It was a humbling realization, if I am honest with myself.

This Black woman, who arguably had the Georgia gubernatorial election stolen from her, didn’t fade away after her loss. She didn’t throw a pity party. She didn’t whine incessantly about an election being stolen from her. She got on with things and worked even harder for the greater good.

Wonder Woman lives in Georgia

And that work helped save us from the National Nightmare that is the Donald J. Trump presidency. In fact, we are learning now that we owe our salvation to black women all across this country. They did the bulk of the heavy lifting. And in other places it was the latina vote, and still, in others, the indigenous vote.

This delicious swirl of all the flavors that make up this country saved us from our worst inclinations.

With that in mind, Rall and I have spent the better part of the last month hammering out what we want this podcast to be. So far it has evolved from a crossroads where black and brown culture intersect to something bigger.

We’re definitely going to talk about living in this country as black and brown men, the challenges, the overlap, the beauty. But we also seek to include everyone else who lives in a slightly different America because of the color of their skin, or their gender, or religion, or orientation, or…

You get the idea. And we want to celebrate those differences and that overlap.

Like a caterpillar in a chrysalis, this thing will continue to evolve. Our hope is to create something informative, fun, and unifying.

We are passionate about this. We want to do something, anything, that might make this country just a wee bit better for all of us. We want to beat back the ugly that the Trump presidency has allowed to run free.

We want to do something good.

So that’s my sales pitch for the American Swirl Podcast. A weekly show I will be doing with my dear friend Rall Elder.

Who know, maybe one day we’ll get lucky enough to have Stacey Abrams as a guest.

Thank you.
