Unopened Boxes

I had a dream about two people I have never met. A couple. Well, they used to be. Then they weren’t.

Let’s stay friends, they decided.

As I watched them I thought, well that never ends well.

She moved out of their flat while he was at work. When he came home to a half empty home it was decidedly less home.

His text read: you forgot the Beans album I got you for your birthday.

Oh shit, I love that record. Would you mind bringing it by?

Sure. Want me to pick up some Thai on the way?

I would love that!

So he grabbed the record and headed to their Thai place before heading to her new place. He knew where it was because he had helped her find it.

Door is open. Just let yourself in.

He sat in his car for a moment staring at the text trying to remember why they ended it in the first place.

The Thai was eaten, beers were consumed, laughs were echoing throughout the new place. They fell back into comfortable old habits and ended up in her new bed surrounded by unopened boxes.

She stared at the wall praying he would wake and just go. He stared at the ceiling wondering if he could get out without waking her.

I woke up. Reached over just to be sure.

It was just a dream.
