Sorry it’s been so long. I started a letter last week, but some shiny object distracted me.
It was the Winter Olympics, the shiny object. My wife loves figure skating so we watched. It’s always amazing to see what they can do – men and women. The grace, the beauty, and this time: the absolute fucking joy.
I would have called you tell you about it, about this kid named Alysa and how she skates the way a heart sings when it’s in love. I am not unique in the way I teared up happy tears watching her skate.
But that wasn’t even the amazing part, right? The amazing part was watching her and all of the other women skaters hype each other up. They legit were pulling for their competitors and consoling one another and celebrating each other.
And it wasn’t just figure skating. It was skiing, and snowboarding, and cross-country, and… women just being badass and celebrating other badass women.
That’s when it hit me: we men could stand to be a lot more like these badass women.
Imagine it, dad – men straightening out other King’s crowns, hyping each other up whenever one of us gets to the plate. Not just our own – but other men trying to best us – yeah, I wanna beat your best, but if you shine, we all shine. Man, what the fuck would that do for men’s mental health?
These women, man, if we could get the fuck out of their way they could really teach us some shit.
Anyway dad, you should have seen that kid, Alysa. She would have made you cry happy tears, too.
